Because geographies are very complex in real life, it requires an enormous size of data to define geography accurately on a software application. This enormousness means that geospatial data has to be handled using big data tools for all practical purposes. The utility that big data tools offer, generate plenty of opportunities for growth of geospatial big data. However, some moral concerns over the handling of this data have challenged the growth of this technology.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allerin.com\/wp-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/The-challenges-and-opportunities-that-follow-Geospatial-Big-Data.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6808 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allerin.com\/wp-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/The-challenges-and-opportunities-that-follow-Geospatial-Big-Data.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"886\" height=\"519\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.allerin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/The-challenges-and-opportunities-that-follow-Geospatial-Big-Data.jpg 886w, https:\/\/www.allerin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/The-challenges-and-opportunities-that-follow-Geospatial-Big-Data-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.allerin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/The-challenges-and-opportunities-that-follow-Geospatial-Big-Data-768x450.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 886px) 100vw, 886px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h1>Challenges facing Geospatial Big Data<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>As geospatial data keeps growing continuously, there will be a rising need for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opengeospatial.org\/blog\/1866\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high-performance computing<\/a> to process it. This will escalate the hardware costs to manage such a system.<\/li>\n<li>There are a number of concerns surrounding the moral and ethical values with regard to the collection of high-resolution geospatial data.<\/li>\n<li>Many organizations that are responsible for the protection of individual privacy rights, such as disclosure review boards, institutional review boards, and federal laws, often do not recognize highly focused spatial data as something that should be protected under human subjects\u2019 privacy protection policies.<\/li>\n<li>Several studies have mentioned how the anonymity of highly focused <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jid\/article\/214\/suppl_4\/S409\/2527910#43447393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spatial data can be easily compromised<\/a> by linking such data to other public databases.<\/li>\n<li>The validity of spatial data also comes into question, since the coverage of sources for this data is not uniform w.r.t sex, literacy, and income groups.<\/li>\n<li>Most spatial data is collected from urban areas while only a fraction is sourced from rural areas. This causes severe complications when comparing data between two localities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Opportunities for Geospatial Big Data<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>User Location Data crossed 1 Petabyte back in 2009 and has since been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geospatialworld.net\/article\/big-data-the-future-is-in-analytics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">growing steadily at a rate of close to 20%<\/a>, according to estimates of McKinsey Global Institute.<\/li>\n<li>IBM has reported that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/blogs\/insights-on-business\/consumer-products\/2-5-quintillion-bytes-of-data-created-every-day-how-does-cpg-retail-manage-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about 2.5 Quintillion bytes of data is generated every day<\/a> and a huge chunk of this data is \u2018location-tagged\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Internet traffic from <a href=\"https:\/\/marketingland.com\/mobile-top-sites-165725\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mobile is starting to dominate<\/a> that from desktops in many populated countries, including India. Mobile traffic is location-aware.<\/li>\n<li>As more and more people go mobile, more \u2018location-tagged\u2019 data will be flowing into geospatial big data systems.<\/li>\n<li>The processing power of our systems is increasing day by day as per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/m\/mooreslaw.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moore\u2019s Law.<\/a> This makes an even more significant number of devices compatible to process geospatial data.<\/li>\n<li>The introduction of <a href=\"http:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/AWSEC2\/latest\/UserGuide\/concepts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parallel computing with Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud Services<\/a> (EC<sup>2<\/sup>) has made it possible for smaller companies to create geospatial big data applications without having to invest exuberantly in technical resources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<p>In conclusion, some moral and ethical challenges have arisen due to inadequacies in understanding implications of geospatial big data by privacy protection agencies.
