These features must be invariant to irrelevant variations of the input. These features must also preserve relevant information. A major obstacle in machine learning was to determine how to learn such good features automatically. Convolutional neural networks use images directly as input. The convolution network performs the functions that are performed by cells in the visual cortex such as extracting elementary visual features like oriented edges, end-points, corners, etc. Convolutional neural networks consist of convolutional layers which extract useful information from the input and eliminate irrelevant variability.<\/p>\n<p>Each stage in a convolutional network is composed of a filter bank, and feature pooling layers. With multiple stages, a convolutional network can learn multi-level hierarchies of features.<\/p>\n<p>Today convolutional neural networks are applied in a variety of areas, including natural language processing, image and pattern recognition, speech recognition, and video analysis. These networks can be used to assess video quality and in object classification and detection. The performance of convolutional neural networks on recognizing a particular image is now close to that of humans. In recent experiments, researchers were able to demonstrate a convolutional neural network\u2019s ability to spot faces from different angles, including upside down.<\/p>\n<h1>Video Analysis with Convolutional Neural Networks<\/h1>\n<p>Video analysis is more complex than image analysis as it has the temporal dimension. But, now convolutional neural networks are being used to explore the video domain too. One approach used in video analysis is to treat space and time as equivalent dimensions of the input. After this step, convolutions are performed in both time and space. Another approach is to fuse features of different convolutional neural networks that are responsible for the spatial and temporal stream.<\/p>\n<h1>Drug Discovery with Convolutional Neural Networks<\/h1>\n<p>Convolutional neural networks are also used in drug discovery. It helps in predicting the interaction between molecules and biological proteins. These interactions can be used to identify potential treatments, which are more effective and safe.<\/p>\n<p>The greatest advantage of the convolutional neural network is that they can automatically learn appropriate features selection. With this ability, you get good object recognition accuracy. With convolutional neural networks, we can now train machines to learn appropriate features and representations from raw images.
