But when implemented properly, DevOps can transform your software engineering process, and create value for both employees and customers. Thus, it will help in producing better business performance and value.<\/p>\n

The following are the 7 initiatives to implement DevOps:<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Recognize your business requirements<\/h1>\n

Several enterprises face a common problem while embarking on the DevOps journey – where to start!! So, the first step should be defining the goals and requirements of your organization. This can be done by doing a thorough inspection of your company\u2019s needs, and consulting with stakeholders at all levels. Having a common definition will ensure that those participating will focus on the project with a unified vision. Once the main goals of implementing DevOps are defined and agreed, you can formalize concrete tasks and milestones.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Pick the team<\/h1>\n

People are the main ingredient in a successful DevOps initiative. Having the right staff on the DevOps team will make or break the initiative. But, there is no given set of guidelines to decide how the team should look. In my experience, you should hire people who understand the DevOps initiative and are ready to work in team. Another option is to merge the dev and ops teams into one big team. This will help in giving developers and operations staff an insight into the other side of the fence.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Pick an app<\/h1>\n

Choose an application to focus on. It is easier to define clear-cut, short-term goals from an application level than from an enterprise level. It is important to choose an app that is important for business; as it will help keep momentum and make sure that enough focus is given, particularly from senior stakeholders.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Pick a methodology<\/h1>\n

If you already have an established SDLC in use, then you must start with a detailed assessment of the SDLC. This will enable you to streamline all the tasks and processes. Depending on the business requirements, moving to an agile methodology might be suitable as well. Agile is suitable to DevOps as it relies on continuous integration and testing, which can only be achieved through well-designed automation.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Change the metrics<\/h1>\n

In a DevOps initiative, the metrics for success must be aligned to the end goal. Focus should be given on mean time to repair (MTTR) or mean time between failures (MTBF), and promoting reactive fixes. Also, the metrics should promote improving agility and business value.<\/p>\n

6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Automate as much as possible<\/h1>\n

Decide how much automation is needed. Enterprises should have a clear visibility of the goals and then narrow to the scope regarding which automation to start with.<\/p>\n

7.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Consider a tool chain<\/h1>\n

Most DevOps initiatives are focused on leveraging automation. But, you must understand that the overall goal of a true DevOps implementation includes a tool chain. Tool chains work to deliver integrated IT process management. This concept is a plug-and-play approach to evaluate and select tools, so that each tool can be loosely coupled to its adjacent tool in the application life cycle. It ensures that all of the automation touch points are linked. Linking will help in speeding up the movement of releases through the tool chain while reducing errors and rework.<\/p>\n
