It is a model in which data, processing and applications are concentrated in devices at the network edge rather than existing almost entirely in the cloud.

Fog vs. Cloud

As the number of connected devices across the world continues to increase exponentially, the amount of data being generated is also growing rapidly. Building of new server farms in order to keep up with this increase can be done, but this will only work for so long. With Fog Computing, the handling of the interpretation logic for use by a smart device can be done locally rather than requiring a trip to the cloud. As a result, in place of an increasingly backed up centralized data model, a decentralization of data will start, where clouds and piles of data work together as needed, creating a spider web of interconnectivity.

The reason for such hope comes from two factors. First, it’s a natural evolution of where our platform wants to go and since the platform is about openness, and is able to build logic on open languages, it is capable to embed this logic anywhere in the IoT stack – including smart hardware. Second, it’s a model everyone agrees with, even though it’s still a relatively new concept, Fog Computing makes much sense for IoT as a whole.

A sensible shift

An evolutionary shift from the cloud to the fog makes complete sense. The cloud boom originally began when mobile devices like smart-phones and tablets had started to become all the rage. But back then, these devices were weak on computing power, and mobile networks were both slow and unreliable. Therefore, it made complete sense to use a hub-and-spoke cloud architecture for all communications.
But now that most of us are using reliable 4G technologies, and the computational power of mobile devices now rivals that of many PCs, it makes perfect sense to move from a hub-and-spoke model to one that resembles a mesh or edge computing data architecture. Doing so eliminates bandwidth bottlenecks and latency issues which are going to undoubtedly cripple the IoT movement in the long run.

If anyone in the past thought that cloud computing is the pinnacle of infrastructure designs, they should surely think again. The current cloud model would not be able to handle billions of devices and instant communication. Fog computing has presented itself as a viable option, and possibly, the only real option available to us at the present moment.

Fog computing is being used for the processing of data from IoT devices, instead of sending such data to the cloud for processing.
