As organizations are making more use of public cloud IaaS, it must have the ability to monitor, manage and optimize the use of IaaS services in a cost-effective manner. Business leaders are now expecting the ability to track cloud-related spending with transparency and accuracy. Further, they expect to achieve optimal business value from a minimum spend.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Infrastructure and operation (I&O) leaders who are responsible for managing cloud resources must establish processes to ensure they can deliver to these expectations. To help achieve these goals, a collective practice called cloud service expense management (CSEM) is used. A growing number of vendors are now delivering CSEM tools. Cloud service expense management tools are those tools that automate the review and optimization of the current and future expenditure on externally sourced cloud services. CSEM tools can address IaaS issues more easily and more efficient than manual methods.<\/p>\n

<\/h6>\n

The CSEM tool market is still in its early stages; but, as the investment in public cloud resources is growing, the need for expense transparency is increasing.<\/p>\n

<\/h6>\n

Gartner has identified four primary areas of CSEM functionality that infrastructure and operations leaders should look for when evaluating CSEM tools.<\/p>\n

<\/h6>\n

Let\u2019s take a look at these functionalities:<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Plan<\/h1>\n

Before engaging with a cloud service provider (CSP), I&O leaders must be able to model a number of different options from multiple providers. Early decisions are important because it is difficult to switch vendors as there are significant charges to migrate your data from the current provider to an alternative.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Track<\/h1>\n

I&O leaders must be also able to track their consumption of and spending on cloud resources. This includes the ability to calculate spending to organizational units, projects, and initiatives. They must also have near-real-time visibility to monitor their usage versus what was forecasted and budgeted.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Reduce<\/h1>\n

For reducing expenses, I&O must find a way to identify overprovisioned resources and to “right size\u201d these resources where appropriate. Additionally, I&O leaders must also need to be updated with pricing model changes or promotions offered by providers.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Optimize<\/h1>\n

I&O leaders require insights from consumption analytics to be able to identify ways to use resources more efficiently and more cost-effectively.<\/p>\n

<\/h6>\n

When evaluating CSEM tools, you must compare vendor features and functionality against the features in the CSEM Tool Features Framework that are most relevant to your organization. No vendor is likely to have every feature available within their product. You must carefully analyse your requirements before choosing a vendor.
